Street Ice 1.0 MATERIAL DESCRIPTION Street Ice S/I-3 is a full bodied, high performance acrylic latex coating. It is fortified with fillers and is available in colors specifically blended for use on in-line hockey installations. Street Ice is formulated to resist the abrasion expected on a competition-level in-line or street hockey facility.
2.0 INTENDED USE Street Ice was the first product designed specifically to withstand the rigors of an in-line hockey arena. The surface texture can be modified through the addition of silica sand in the Acrylic Resurfacer 920-29.
3.0 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Note: Low temperatures & high humidity will increase drying time drastically. Maximum surface temperature = 140°F.
4.0 Surface Preparation 4.1 Base Construction Surface must meet or exceed the American Sports Builders Association (ASBA) applicable Guidelines. Upgrading and recoating previously colored surfaces requires the surface and base construction to be in sound condition and in compliance with the applicable ASBA Guidelines.
4.2 Substrate Cure Requirements New hot-mix asphalt surfaces must be allowed to cure a minimum of six months. If skating is allowed with less than six months cure time, rutting may occur. For new Portland cement concrete surfaces, a minimum of 28 days cure time is required. No concrete curing compounds may be used. The concrete must have a medium broom finish. The surface must be acid-etched with either phosphoric or muriatic acid. If the new concrete surface is smooth, two applications maybe required. The acid residues must be rinsed thoroughly. Application may begin thereafter.
4.3 Surface Condition The surface upon which Street Ice is to be applied must be smooth, free of dirt, loose or flaking paint, oily materials or chemical residues, vegetation of any sort and any other debris or foreign matter that may prevent the proper product adhesion. For application over an existing Street Ice surface, pressure wash thoroughly, rough-up the existing surface by sanding or light grinding, and remove dust residues from the surface by blowing or washing clean to insure proper adhesion.
4.4 Surface Imperfections Before application of Street Ice, the court surface shall be flooded with water and allowed to drain. Any depressions capable of submerging a U.S. five cent piece after one hour should be marked with chalk, not crayon or a grease pencil. These areas must be allowed to thoroughly dry. Once dried, a patch must be applied to the marked area. For patching products and mix designs, please refer to the product data sheet for Acrylic Patch Binder 920-39.
5.0 MIXING INSTRUCTIONS Street Ice comes ready-to-use. In some cases, such as high temperatures, water may improve the workability of Street Ice. A maximum ratio of 5 parts Street Ice to 1 part water is allowed.
6.0 GUIDE TO APPLICATION 6.1 System Recommendation Two (2) applications have proven to give excellent performance results. Deco recommends the use of Acrylic Resurfacer 920-29 prior to the application of any Deco Surfacing System. See the data sheet on Acrylic Resurfacer for further information.
6.2 Application Using a flexible rubber squeegee, 50 or 70 durometer, apply Street Ice parallel to one of the sides of the area to be coated. Care should be taken not to leave ridges where adjoining applications overlap. Application in hot conditions (90° F or above) are improved by keeping surface damp with a fine mist water spray. Additional applications should be installed at 90° to the previous application.
6.3 Drying and Cure Time Street Ice must be allowed to dry 4 hours before another coating can be applied, assuming 70°F temperatures and 50% relative humidity. Low temperatures and high humidity will increase drying time dramatically. After final application of Street Ice, the surface shall cure a minimum of 3 days at temperatures above 60° F and 50% relative humidity.
7.0 COVERAGE The undiluted coverage rate is approximately 0.04 gallons per square yard, per application (225 square feet per gallon).
8.0 CLEAN-UP If clean-up occurs immediately after application, water will remove acrylics from equipment.
9.0 LIMITATIONS 9.1 Surface Limitations Street Ice is limited to application on hot-mix asphalt and Portland cement concrete recreational surfaces. Deco Surfacing Systems does not recommend, nor authorize the application of Street Ice on any other surfaces without prior approval from your Deco Area Manager.
9.2 Weather Limitations No part of the construction involving the Deco Surfacing System should be conducted during rainfall, or when rainfall is imminent. The air temperature must be at least 60ºF and rising. Do not apply when surface temperature is above 140ºF.
9.3 Do Not Over Dilute Over dilution can cause streaking, foaming, adhesion failure, and poor overall durability of the coating.
9.4 Indoor Application Curing Drying times are retarded by high humidity, cool temperatures or lack of air movement. This is particularly important to note when installing indoors, where all three factors are often very pronounced.
9.5 Keep From Freezing Street Ice is a water-based acrylic system and it must be kept from freezing during storage or in transit. If you receive product you suspect may have been exposed to freezing temperatures, consult your Deco Area Manager for proper handling instructions.
